Personally, because I play so much and test so many Betas and such, I recently performed this but did not restore my backup. With that said, I have found that before applying the update, especially if you have been running a Developer Preview, it is best to use the Nokia Software Recovery Tool to install it to the latest released version (and don't restore backups yet), load all updates since that released version, perform a hard reset after verifying no more updates, and then either setup your device from scratch or restore a backup. Microsoft does not release Windows Phone Beta OSs to anyone outside of the company.
It is the actual released "bits" that consumers will receive, as they will also receive other updates containing improvements, and fixes.
